What are BTUs?

BTU, or British Thermal Unit, is a measure of energy. It is the total heat output of all grill burners per hour and is typically measured by the fuel consumption of the burners themselves. That said, a higher BTU measurement doesn’t necessarily always mean a better grill.

TRU-Infrared Grills & BTUs

Char-Broil® TRU-Infrared™ grills don’t need as high of an output of BTUs as traditional convective grills. The TRU-Infrared™ cooking system produces an intensely hot infrared heat that is distributed evenly across the cooking grates. This heat is quickly and efficiently transferred directly to your food. Searing food quickly and locking in juices, these grills use less fuel.

BTU Ranges

When purchasing a standard convective grill, we recommend 75 to 100 BTUs per square inch. For an TRU-Infrared™ grill, 50 to 80 BTUs will only be needed.
